Our coffee origins | Papua New Guinea Wahgi Valley

Updated: Jul 22, 2023

Why do we love it?

Our Wahgi valley coffee is the shining star of the green coffee we buy. It's stunning flavours of black tea, liquorice, praline and citrus come through in abundance when roasted. This gives a real flavour punch to our WAKE UP espresso blend.

The boldness of the aromas also contributes a wonderful depth of flavour to the MOVE blend with a beautiful smoothness and minimal bitter notes.

If, like us, you love a strong, dark espresso with a wonderful flavour profile, this Papua New Guinean star is for you. With a robust body and a strength that is more than able to accentuate and contrast the sweetness of milk in a latte, flat white or cappuccino, we can't recommend this highly enough.

The Region

Coffee from the Wahgi Valley in Papua New Guinea is highly regarded for its unique flavour profile and high quality. The Wahgi Valley is known for producing Arabica coffee beans, which are grown at elevations ranging from 4,000 to 6,000 feet above sea level.

The coffee grown in the Wahgi Valley is typically hand-picked and processed using the wet processing method. This involves removing the outer layers of the coffee cherry and fermenting the beans to remove the mucilage before drying them. The coffee industry in the Wahgi Valley is an important source of income for the local communities. Many smallholder farmers grow coffee on their land and then sell it to local cooperatives or exporters. The industry is also a major employer, providing jobs for thousands of people in the region.

In recent years, there has been a growing interest in specialty coffee from PNG, including coffee from the Wahgi Valley. We offer this coffee to showcase its unique flavour profile and support the local communities that produce it.
